26th July – Verratti To United?

HEADLINES: Marco Verratti is in a contract disagreement with PSG – Metro

According to the Metro, Man Utd and Barcelona are ready in case Marco Verratti looks for a way out of PSG, with the club reportedly paying new signing Dani Alves almost twice the wages key-man Verratti is on now. Mourinho has confirmed he wants two new signings for United, though admitted that the overspending of big clubs has distorted the market. So, could this deal happen and if so, on what terms?

Meeting Marco

Verratti, a 24 year old Italian born in Pescara, had the privilege of playing for his place of birthday for 4 successful professional seasons having also represented them at youth level. In 2012 he made his move to PSG and has been one of the most in-demand midfielders since. He’s won 4 Ligue 1’s, 3 French Cups, 4 French League Cups and 4 French SuperCups in his time in Paris.

Do United Need Him?

Mourinho walked into a club that boasted probably the best midfield options in the league. Since his arrival he’s overseen the sales of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and even Wayne Rooney who was often used in midfield by Louis van Gaal. The arrival of Pogba last summer strengthened them further, but Verratti could bring the balance needed to get the best out of the current world-record signing.

Verratti would be the perfect heir to Michael Carrick, United’s new club captain. Verratti has all the skill a midfielder could need, but with it has the composure, defensive intelligence and awareness of a typical Italian footballer (something Mourinho would love) that perhaps Pogba lacks, despite all his brilliance. Let’s not forget one of United’s players of the season; Ander Herrera. The spaniard was in excellent form for Jose’s men throughout the season and showed that he is more than capable of being a key-part of a title winning side.

Verratti would be a great signing for United. He’ll bring balance to their midfield and be the missing piece to an almost perfect starting XI. Jose is often criticised for ‘buying’ his squads, but whether that’s true or not, he does know how to work the transfer market. It’s hard to argue that any of his signings in Manchester have been failures, as they all seamlessly slot into the line up. This could be another bit of business that would surely confirm Man United as one of the real favourites for the 2018 title.

How Does He Compare?

United are also chasing Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, so how do the two differ?

Verratti is the younger option, but other than that their stats are very similar. Matic has the Premier League experience having worked with Mourinho before at Chelsea, though Verratti can hardly be considered an ‘unproven’ option. Verratti looks more comfortable carrying the ball forward and slightly edges it on pass completion success rates, but by 1%, hardly a game-changing figure. United have two great targets to pursue, though it remains to be seen whether the clubs would sell to a rival competing for similar major trophies.

Chances Of Transfer: 4/10

Ultimately, I don’t think this deal will happen. United are exploring other targets and PSG have the money to keep their star players. Besides, with Barcelona lurking, that may be his preferred destination.

Would It Be A Good Signing?: 10/10

Think he’d fit United perfectly, so we hope to see him in the Premier League as soon as possible!
